The development of a religious observance policy was discussed in length. The following ideas where discussed for inclusion in the policy.
· The Board of Regents mandates that universities have a policy regarding special arrangements for students for the observance of religious holidays (i.e., Section 3.4.3). The “special arrangements” implies accommodations for students who miss class in observation of a religious tradition.
· To clearly state students’ rights under this policy, the phrase, “cannot be academically penalized” is suggested.
· Any reference to a remedy when an instructor refuses to accommodate a student should refer to the “academic appeal process.”
· Great effort should be taken to assure that requirements of faculty as to this policy do not infringe on academic freedom or create an extra burden.
Cynthia Cano and Jennifer Graham were asked to develop a draft incorporating the ideas developed at the meeting. As a quorum was not in attendance, further action was deferred to the January 2011 meeting.
