Approval of Minutes

The minutes from the January 23 meeting were approved as distributed. Kay reported that the minutes from October 24 and October 30 were never approved, and that she and John are collaborating on minutes from November 7, 14, 28, and January 9, when she was absent. Each of those sets of minutes will be circulated this week for approval at next week’s meeting.

Action Items

SOCI 1121 Introduction to Sociology as a Global Overlay
This course was previously approved by SoCC and forwarded through CAPC, University Senate, and the Provost to the system general education committee. The course was not approved at the system level; some confusion regarding inconsistency with the system common course number for Introduction to Sociology seems to have contributed to this decision. The course outcomes were updated since the last submission to make it more explicated that the course was global in nature. Upon a vote, the course was approved by a vote of 9-0-0. This course will now be forwarded to CAPC and University Senate as an information item, and to the Provost and the system disciplinary committee and system general education committee for review.

GC2Y 2000 Seeing Like a State as an Area B2 Section
After discussion, the committee approved the section by a vote of 9-0-0. This course will now be forwarded to CAPC and University Senate as an information item.

GC2Y 2000 Youth Cultures in the Modern World (also submitted as “Is It Easy to Be Young?”) as an Area B2 Section
The committee discussed some questions related to the learning beyond the classroom experience and reviewed the language of the outcomes. The committee will request clarification and revision in these areas. Pending these revisions, the committee is ready to approve the course.

GC2Y 2000 The AIDS Epidemic as an Area B2 Section
The committee recommended some changes to the outcomes to make them more assessable and requested some clarification on the learning beyond the classroom requirement.

GC2Y 2000 Understanding Islam and GC1Y 1000 Pop Culture and Baseball will be reviewed next week.

Discussion Items

Tom Ormond asked to join the committee on February 20 to discuss SoCC’s request for oversight on GC1Y and GC2Y courses. He will be added to the agenda on that day.

Cara Meade has preliminary results from the first semester of assessment on the new core. She thanked committee members for helping gather several more sections after last week’s meeting. She will do one final call for results from instructors. Cara will provide the information in the committee’s Dropbox.

Next Meeting

The committee will meet on Wednesday, February 6, 2013, at 12 noon, in A&S 216.

Adjournment

The committee adjourned at 1:10 p.m.
