Action Items

GC2Y 2000 Understanding Islam (Resubmission) as an Area B2 Section
The committee recommended some changes to the outcome statements to facilitate assessment. Upon a vote, the committee approved the submission, pending changes to the outcome statements, with a vote of 8-0-0. After these updates are received, this proposal will be forwarded to CAPC and University Senate as an information item.

Discussion Items

GC1Y and GC2Y Oversight
Tom Ormond gave an update on oversight of the GC1Y and GC2Y courses. Tom is creating a process to ensure that faculty credentials are reviewed by the chairs. The Provost’s Office may elect to consult with SoCC on an as-needed basis if there concerns about an individual’s qualifications. Tom is working with Ed Hale in IR to ensure that all the GC1Y and GC2Y student opinion surveys have been distributed. If students need department chair approval for any issue related to a GC1Y or GC2Y course, they will need to work with the instructor’s department chair of record. Tom is also working with colleges to set quotas for the number of GC1Y and GC2Y sections that each college will need to provide each term; the issue of who will have the opportunity to teach GC1Y or GC2Y classes if there is more supply than demand will be left to the colleges. This year’s ummer teaching assignments were limited by the Provost this year to ensure that our course offerings did not exceed demand; any process used to determine offerings in future summer terms will be communicated through the deans.

Next Meeting

The committee will meet on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at 12 noon, in A&S 216.
