Subcommittee on Core Curriculum Minutes 2013-02-27

Call to Order

The meeting was called to order by John Swinton at 12 noon in Arts & Sciences Room 216.

Approval of Minutes

The minutes from the October 24, October 30, November 7, November 14, November 28, January 9, January 23, January 30, February 6, February 13, and February 20 were approved as previously distributed.

Announcements

Revisions for the GC2Y 2000 Understanding Islam course were submitted as requested. This section will now be forwarded to CAPC and University Senate.

Action Items

GC1Y 1000 Conceptions of Imagination; Conceptions of Learning as an Area B1 Course
The committee discussed the research component and the topical specification of the course. The committee recommended some changes to the outcomes. The committee also recommended a more detailed course description and the inclusion of some topics in the description to provide more clarification on the course. Cara Meade will work with the submitters to assist with a revision.

GC1Y 1000 Baseball in American Culture as a GC1Y Section (Resubmission)
Upon review, the committee approved the section as revised with a vote of 6-0-0.

RELI 1111 Introduction to World Religions as an Area C Course
The department will be asked to clarify if this course will be similar in content to the existing GC2Y World Religions course. If so, the department may need to select which course it wants to use in the core.

Discussion Items

Cara will be presenting on assessment during the first 30 minutes of next week’s meeting.

The committee will meet on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at 12 noon, in A&S 216.
