Approval of Minutes

The minutes from the February 27 meeting were approved as previously distributed.

Discussion Item

SoCC Assessment Responsibilities. Cara and Jason reported on the core curriculum assessment process. They are pleased with the initial round of rubric-based assessment results. We have recorded over 5000 rubrics to date. For the first time, we may have data available to help make decisions regarding core curriculum. This will help us continue to improve our core and help address SACS and USG mandates to assess general education. SoCC needs to review this data, see what students have achieved, and make recommendations based on the data. SoCC can also make recommendations based on the assessments themselves. We will also need to start assessing the overlays in the next year. Cara has created a new folder in the committee’s Dropbox with reports. Committee members should review these in preparation for future discussion.

Action Items

GC2y 2000 Youth Cultures in the Modern World as an Area B2 Section (Resubmission, Originally Proposed as Is It Easy to be Young?)
Upon review, the committee approved the proposal as resubmitted with a vote of 8-0-0. The committee requested two editorial changes. Pending acceptance of those changes, this proposal will be forwarded to CAPC and University Senate as an information item.

RELI 1111 Introduction to World Religion as an Area C Course and for the Global Overlay (Continued)
Responding to previous questions, the department confirmed that the content of this course and the GC2Y section on world religions is different enough to merit two distinct courses. After further discussion, the committee approved this course with a vote of 8-0-0. This course will now be forwarded to CAPC and University Senate as an information item. Because this course is a part of Area A-E of the core, it will then be sent to the system disciplinary committee and the system General Education Committee for review.

Next Meeting

The committee will meet on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at 12 noon, in A&S 216.

Adjournment
