Discussion Items
Initial Senate assignments for next year have been distributed. Members of the committee expressed concerns about the fact that none of next year’s SoCC members were from an Area D Science field, and that one discipline had two members assigned to SoCC. These concerns will be passed on to ECUS for review.
The needed changes were made to the GC1Y Concepts of Learning/Concepts of Imagination course, and this class will now be forwarded to CAPC and Senate. John will also draft a letter to the Provost, as this course is designed to be team-taught and this will require a strategy for addressing faculty load issues.
The Interim Provost has approved a global overlay exception for transfer students, allowing them to graduate with one global overlay course instead of the required three. This implementation decision was made after finding that transfer students were having significant issues obtaining global overlay courses, particularly since many come to Georgia College core-complete and since many disciplines have not had major courses approved for the global overlay. The committee expressed understanding as to why that decision had been made, but also voiced frustration that departments had not forwarded courses for consideration, concerns about this change taking away some of the distinctiveness of our curriculum, and a desire that this change not be permanent.
The committee reviewed a revised rubric for GC2Y courses, and discussed what level of knowledge/skill students would be expected to have after a single course early in their curriculum. The committee will look at this rubric again its discussion on assessment on April 17.
Action Item
PHIL 2010 Survey of Philosophy for the Global Overlay
Upon review, the committee approved the course with a vote of 8-0-0. This course will be forwarded to CAPC and University Senate as an action item, and then forwarded to the system General Education Committee for review.
Next Meeting
The committee will meet on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at 12 noon, in A&S 216.
