Discussion Item

New Global Overlay Forms. The committee noted that the information on the new global overlay forms provided much more information regarding whether or not these courses met the overlay requirements.

Action Items

PSYC 3500 Social Psychology as a Global Overlay Course
Upon a vote, the committee approved the course with a vote of 7-0-0.

CHEM 2920 Chemistry Seminar as a Global Overlay Course
Upon a vote, the committee approved the course with a vote of 8-0-0.

Discussion Item

Use of Western European Content in Global Overlay Courses. The committee addressed a question regarding whether or not “global” constitutes any area outside the United States, or whether only specific areas (i.e., non-European) are implied. The committee agreed, based on prior approvals and the inclusion of any study abroad program, that any area outside the United States would apply. The Regents’ definition of “global,” and that each course needs to have at least a part of the course that focuses on areas outside of the United States.

There was also a question about whether the degree of global coursework required for GC2Y and other global overlay courses is the same. The 2Y course not only has a global overlay, but the entire course should focus on global issues. This is a key component of the GC2Y common course description. However, GC2Y courses do not necessarily have to address subject matter from more than one country.

Chavonda mentioned that the Diversity Task Force is considering a recommendation to add a domestic diversity component to the core. The committee discussed this and revisited last week’s discussion about possibly amending the third global overlay requirement to allow either global or multicultural issues to complete this requirement. Cara will place this discussion on the next CAPC agenda.
