Subcommittee on Core Curriculum Minutes 2013-11-06

Call to Order

The meeting was called to order by John Swinton at 1:03 p.m. in Arts & Sciences Room 2-51.

Approval of Minutes

The minutes from the October 23rd meeting were approved with one correction.

Action Items

GEOG 4210 Military Geography for the Global Overlay
Upon a vote, the committee approved the course with a vote of 8-0-0.

GEOG 4215 Insurgency and Terrorism for the Global Overlay
Upon a vote, the committee approved the course with a vote of 8-0-0.

GEOG 4250 Geography of Health for the Global Overlay
During review, the committee noticed that one of the questions on the approval form had been cut and pasted from one of the previous forms. The committee decided to move forward with the approval based on what was known about the course, and to ask the submitter to provide a revised response to that question. Upon a vote, the committee approved the course with a vote of 8-0-0.

Discussion Items

Amy asked if the reading-intensive nature of the GC1Y and GC2Y courses needed to be added to the approval course forms to these courses. Mary will bring the original forms to our next meeting.

John mentioned that we still needed to address the question about crediting faculty for the fourth hour of GC2Y courses with the provost. Kay reported that she had a meeting with the Provost earlier this week about other subjects and that this issue came up; the Provost stated that this was a department chair and dean responsibility.

The committee’s next meeting, if needed, will be Wednesday, November 13, at 1:00 p.m. in Arts & Sciences Room 2-51.
