Announcements

GEOG 2100 Introduction to Geospatial Science was approved for Area D at the System General Education Committee Meeting on October 25, 2013.

Action Items

PHYS 2920 Sophomore Seminar for the Global Overlay
The committee discussed the percentage of coursework that needed to be focused on global perspectives in order to qualify for the overlay. This course has the same approximate percentage of global curriculum as the Chemistry Sophomore Seminar approved earlier this year. After discussion, the committee approved the course with a vote of 8-0-0.

GC2Y 2000 Global Public Health as an Area B2 Section
Scott shared this proposal with colleagues in Health and Human Performance. There were concerns about whether the faculty member would have SACS qualifications to teach this area, and whether the School of Health and Human Performance would be blocked from developing such a course for their major or Area F in the future because this section exists. The proposal seems to suggest that history will be the primary lens through which the course will be taught. The committee suggested that the department be consulted for clarification and encouraged to discuss the proposal with faculty in Health and Human Performance. John will follow up with the submitter. Scott will serve as a contact for the submitter.

HIST 4950 Islam across the Indian Ocean for the Global Overlay
This course is a topics course and does not have a permanent course number. As such, the global overlay cannot be attached to this course within the student information system. This course will be considered after it has been through the appropriate Curriculum & Instruction process and received its own unique course number.

Next Meeting

The committee’s next meeting, if needed, will be Wednesday, November 20, at 1:00 p.m. in Arts & Sciences Room 2-51.

The committee adjourned at 1:50 p.m.
