Discussion Item

John Swinton met with Tom Ormond after the last meeting. They reviewed the issues on the GC2Y 2000 Global Public Health course proposal, and Tom was supportive of the committee’s efforts to have the faculty members involved meet and discuss the issues. Tom is working to facilitate a meeting between the affected departments.

Tom also asked John Swinton, Cara Meade, and Kay Anderson to do a quick tour of the department chairs meetings in February to discuss processes, assessment, and course needs.

Tom also asked whether SoCC needed to write down its operating procedures. In the past, as a subcommittee of CAPC, SoCC has adopted CAPC’s operating procedures. This year we did not formally address this as a committee.

Scott Butler noted that the College of Health Science is continuing to move forward with a plan to create more global overlays for their students, including a global public health course for their major students.

Amy Sumpter suggested making a course module in D2L to share information about the committee, including sharing approved courses. Amy will work on this over the holidays and bring a sample in to the committee next term.

Cara Meade discussed the Collegiate Learning Assessment, which we administer every four years. During the last administration, our student response rate was so low that we could not score the exam and receive our results. The CLA is part of our assessment plan that was given to SACS. Cara asked for suggestions on how to get 300 seniors to take the exam in the spring, and asked for faculty for ideas on how or when exams could be given or what kind of incentives might appeal to students.

Next Meeting

The committee’s next meeting will meet again at the beginning of the Spring semester. John will gather committee members’ schedules and confirm next semester’s meeting time.

Adjournment

The committee adjourned at 1:58 p.m.
