Subcommittee on Core Curriculum Minutes 2014-03-12

Call to Order

The meeting was called to order by John Swinton at 12:45 p.m. in Atkinson 202.

Approval of Minutes

The minutes from the February 26th meeting were approved with one correction. The March 5 meeting was cancelled.

Action Items

GC1Y 1000 The Capital Punishment Debate as an Area B1 Section
After discussion, the committee approved the section with a vote of 8-0-0.

ARTS 1100 Arts and Ideas for a Global Overlay
The committee approved this course for the global overlay with a vote of 8-0-0. This course will be forwarded to the Provost and then to the system general education committee for review.

ARTS 4870 History of Photography for a Global Overlay
The committee approved this course for the global overlay with a vote of 8-0-0. This course will be forwarded to the Provost for approval.

Discussion Items

Cara asked that SoCC have a discussion about the data submitted for core assessment before our SACS visit. John will add this to the discussion on March 26.

John, Cara, Kay, and Tom Ormond met with the Health Sciences chairs and the A&S chairs yesterday to review SoCC’s history and process. The Health Science chairs were most interested in the global overlay issues; John gave them a summary of the discussion at our last SoCC meeting. The A&S chairs raised the issue of whether the new core was more effective than the old core and gave positive feedback about the new forms that SoCC has adopted.

The committee’s next meeting will be Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at 12:45 p.m. in Atkinson 202.
