Discuss on whether to approve
GC2Y Becoming Animal: Animals in Literature and Theory
Concern about global content. Part of global content is group
presentation.
Two texts include postcolonial Africa. Another text is about Native
Americans.
Indian authors represented as well.
Just like it's hard to imagine being an animal, it's also difficult
when a European writes from the perspective of South Africans /
Indians.
Will look into African, Asian, etc. traditions to find stories about
animals.
Committee was generally satisfied for global requirement.
Q: What about learning beyond the classroom?
Motion: Pass Animals in Literature and Theory as GC2Y course
Seconded. Passed unanimously.
Next topic:
Approve BIOL 2800 as satisfying global overlay.
Motion to approve BIOL 2800 global overlay.
Seconded. Passed unanimously.
Big Data GC2Y discussion postponed for today because two members of
subcommittee in charge of reviewing it aren't here.
Next topic: GC1Y/GC2Y new forms
Proposal:
- Explicitly ask for learning outcomes.
- Take out confusing question #3.
- "Required outcomes for GC1Y/GC2Y" --> "course outcomes"
Motion: Approve modified GC1Y/GC2Y forms.
Seconded. Passed unanimously.
Comment: no specific process for course re-review
Discussion about whether it would be appropriate to re-review courses
or what happens when a non-approved instructor teaches course.
Next week: approve minutes (from last two times)
