Call to Order

The meeting was called to order by Julia Metzker at 1:00 p.m. in Arts & Sciences 2-51.

Agenda

The agenda was approved as distributed.

Minutes

The minutes from March 27th meeting were approved with one correction.

Discussion Items

Volunteers for Next Year. Julia reviewed the names of individuals who have submitted their names for service on SoCC next year. The committee still needs individuals from the College of Health Science, College of Education, and Area A Math.

GC1Y and 2Y Review Rubrics. The committee discussed how writing assignments should be described and assessed. The question of whether a certain number of pages should be required was discussed; some committee members argued that the standards of writing in disciplines are so different that it would be problematic to require a certain number of words. The committee discussed adding revision as a requirement and perhaps clarifying what kinds of writing are required. One possibility for addressing this is to take the language from the submission form and add it to the rubric.

Faculty Development. As part of the discussion on rubrics, the committee noted the need for faculty to have additional faculty development opportunities on writing assessment.

The committee’s next meeting will be Friday, April 10, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. in Arts & Sciences 2-51.
