Subcommittee on Core Curriculum Minutes 2015-10-23

Call to Order

The Subcommittee on Core Curriculum was called to order by Mary Magoulick at 1:00 p.m. in Arts & Sciences 2-51.

Agenda

The agenda was approved as distributed.

Minutes

The minutes from the October 16th meeting were approved with two changes.

Information Items

Following last week’s meeting, Mary confirmed the number required for a quorum with the Senate Parliamentarian. SoCC currently has 16 members, so the number required for a quorum is 9. Non-voting members count in the calculation of a quorum.

The open forum for GC1Y instructors will be held on October 23 at 2:00 pm. Mary shared the discussion questions with the group. The open forum for GC2Y instructors will be October 30 at 2:00 pm.

Action Items

GC2Y 2000 New Zealand: Tragedy, Nationality, and Diversity as an Area B2 Section
The committee received the requested revisions for this course and formally accepted them with a vote of 11-0-0. This proposal will be forwarded to CAPC and University Senate as an information item and to the Provost’s Office for final approval.

GC2Y 2000 Religion and Media as an Area B2 Section
The committee discussed this course. Discussion focused primarily on the questions raised at the last meeting and on whether blogging was an appropriate learning beyond the classroom experience. The committee decided to postpone further discussion on this course until it received responses to those questions from the submitter.

Next Meeting

The committee will meet on October 30, 2015, in A&S 2-51 if there is business to conduct. Otherwise, the next meeting will be on Friday, November 6.
