Call to Order

The Subcommittee on Core Curriculum was called to order by Mary Magoulick at 1:00 p.m. in Arts & Sciences 2-51.

Minutes

The minutes from the October 23rd meeting were approved as distributed.

Action Items

GC2Y 2000 Religion and Media as an Area B2 Section
The committee discussed the writing components of the course and the degree to which it involved analytical writing or if the blog requirement provided sufficient scaffolding for the research paper to be developmental in nature. The committee decided the course met the requirements as outlined on the GC2Y rubric and decided to accept the course with the following non-binding recommendations for the submitter: to describe how the blogs fulfill the learning beyond the classroom experience on the syllabus, and to ensure that the blog writing assignments provide scaffolding for the larger research paper. Upon a vote, the proposal was approved on a voice vote.

Discussion Items

As part of the discussion on the GC2Y course, committee members identified some issues with the current GC2Y proposal form and access to the rubric used to evaluate them. Mary asked members to review the form prior to next week’s meeting and to bring suggestions for improving the form.

Mary noted that 15 people attended the GC1Y forum that was held last Friday. They broke into two groups and ran over time as a result of the engaged discussion.

There will be a GC2Y forum this afternoon. Mary shared the questions that will be used to facilitate discussion.

The committee will meet on November 6, 2015, in A&S 2-51.
