Call to Order

The Subcommittee on Core Curriculum was called to order by Mary Magoulick at 1:00 p.m. in Arts & Sciences 2-51.

Discussion Items

GC1Y and 2Y submission forms and rubric. Suggestions for improving the forms include more clearly separating the 2Y fourth hour requirement into its own section, rather than including it with the learning beyond the classroom requirement, and either adding the rubric to the form or providing a link to it. The committee also discussed the writing-intensive requirement for the 1Y or 2Y courses. The rubric suggests that this should be developmental in nature; the course proposal does not indicate that this is required. A consistent concern as we have reviewed courses has been how long and how much writing should be included. Mary will incorporate this feedback into new drafts of the forms and distribute them to the committee for review next week. Committee members stressed the importance of keeping the forms easy to use and to make sure that they do not appear overwhelming.

Web site. The committee discussed the history behind having committee documents posted to two different websites, one on D2L and the other on the SoCC website. After some discussion, it was moved and seconded to discontinue the D2L website and begin using the SoCC website to store all committee documents. The motion carried on a voice vote.

GC2Y Forum. About ten to twelve faculty attended the GC2Y forum that was held last week. The consensus was that faculty would like to have similar opportunities to discuss their courses more frequently. Another suggestion was to have a 1Y and 2Y session together.

Next Meeting

The committee will meet on November 13, 2015, in A&S 2-51, if we have business to conduct.
