Call to Order

The Subcommittee on Core Curriculum was called to order by Mary Magoulick at 1:00 p.m. in Arts & Sciences 2-51.

Minutes

The minutes from the March 4th meeting will be distributed this week.

Discussion Items

Committee Assignments. The Executive Committee is now accepting requests for committee assignments for the coming year. Mary asked Senators to be sure to submit their requests. Earlier this year, the committee decided to specify that committee members had to be available at 1:00 on Fridays to ensure that members would be able to meet regularly. The University Senate Bylaw states that SoCC’s meeting time cannot be set until after all members have been assigned and the committee has had its organizational meeting, so the committee will likely need to readdress the issue of meeting times for next term. Mary will approach the Executive Committee about the possibility of setting a standard meeting time on the governance calendar so that the committee can meet during the common meeting time.

Meeting with Interim Associate Provost. Mary will be meeting with Costas Spirou next week to discuss a process for recertification of core courses.

System Overlay Decision. On Wednesday, the Board of Regents voted to remove the critical thinking, US perspectives, and global perspectives overlays from the system core curriculum, effective immediately. The Provost’s office will be leading the communication plan to campus. SoCC will revise its approval forms for GC1Y and 2Y courses to remove reference to the overlay requirement.

Recertification Forums. Mary asked committee members to share information they had found on institutions who had well-formulated processes for course recertification. Cara will review examples, items of interest from committee members, and then create a first draft.

Next Meeting

The committee will not meet as a whole on March 18, 2016. Members working on the recertification process will most mostly meet in A&S 2-51, at 1:00 PM.
