University Curriculum Committee Meeting Minutes
February 16, 2011
In attendance: Ken Farr, Barbara Funke, Ryan Brown, Roxanne Farrar, Steve Elliott-Gower, Caralyn Zehnder
I) Minutes from 2/2/2011 approved.
II) Discussion of courses for approval:
1. Area B1 – GC1Y: We the People
Course outcomes need to be rearticulated. In particular, the multiple intellectual approaches need to be specified. Currently, critical thinking outcomes are restatements of the area outcomes. The writing and speaking component needs a clearer narrative. Last paragraph in writing/speaking box provides narrative, which could be expanded to address this. The proposal will be sent back with feedback.
2. Area B1 – GC1Y: Performance of Literature
Discussion focused on the B1 and critical thinking outcomes. The narrative addresses Area B1 outcome, but it would be better to make this more explicit. The critical thinking outcomes need to be rearticulated. LBTC and speaking/writing are fine. The proposal will be sent back with feedback.
3. Area B1 – GC1Y: Representations of the Environment in Multicultural American Literature
This course was approved for Area B1.
4. Area B1 – GC1Y: Philosophy and the Search for Social Justice
This course was approved for Area B1.
5. Area B2 – GC2Y: Theatre as Social Change
THEA 3310 will be removed from the catalog. The outcomes on Global Overlay form are very good; these should be listed under the global overlay section on the alignment form. The B2 learning outcome needs to be rearticulated. The course outcomes should not simply be restatements of the area outcomes. The proposal will be sent back with feedback.
6. Area C1 – MUSC 1200: Introduction to Music Literature
The outcomes on the core/course alignment form do not satisfy the committee, but outcomes (b), (c), and (d) listed in UPS profile do align with the area outcomes, provided the human experience is specifically addressed. The proposal will be sent back with feedback.
IV) Discussion for courses received for feedback:
Area D – CSCI 1200: Current Topics in Computer and Information Technology
The listed outcomes seem to address the Area D technology outcome, but it should be made explicit that technology will be used to solve problems or facilitate problem solving.
Next meeting 3/2 12:30 Atkinson 201.
