Action Items
GC2Y 2000 Love, Pleasure, Friendship, and the Good Life as an Area B2 Section
After discussion, the committee decided to ask for this course to be revised and resubmitted with the following changes: 1) provide examples on the types of out of class experiences students might use for their learning out of the classroom component, 2) clarify or eliminate the verb “understand” in the initial outcome statement for assessment purposes, and 3) include UPS form.
BCOM 4283 Global and International Business Communication for the Global Perspectives Overlay
During discussion, the committee recommended that the verb “review” in the outcomes be changed to facilitate assessment purposes. Upon a vote, the course was approved 7-0-0. Because this overlay will apply to our on-campus global perspectives requirement only and will not be used as an overlay requirement in the core, no additional approval is needed for this course. This course will now be forward to CAPC and University Senate as an information item.
Discussion Items
The committee discussed how to simplify and clarify the submission process for GC1Y and GC2Y courses, particularly in terms of which forms need to be completed and submitted. It also considered whether University Profile System Information needed to be submitted with course proposals, particularly for Areas B1 and B2, to help us better track these courses, and what we should look for in the Area B2 courses to ensure that each course meets the criteria for the writing overlay and has an appropriate fourth hour component. Members of the committee agreed that, at this point, the only criteria that can be used to determine whether a course meets the outcomes for the writing overlay are those initially included in the original proposal, but that perhaps a group can take a look at writing in these courses during the University’s first assessment efforts in this area. The committee specifically questioned on what type of activity – either in class or out of class – was necessary to merit the extra hour for this course. Kay Anderson agreed to follow-up with the Provost to discuss whether the GC2Y classes were required to meet for four hours per week, or whether that fourth hour could be comprised of out-of-class activities.
Announcements
We will meet next week only if we have a significant number of items to consider by Tuesday. Otherwise, our next meeting will be on Thursday, September 22.
