Call to Order

The meeting was called to order by John Swinton at 8:30 a.m., in Arts & Sciences Room 315.

Attendance

Members Present: Martha Allen, Scott Butler, Esther Lopez, Mary Magoulick, Cara Meade, Stephanie McClure, John Swinton, Caralyn Zender, and Kay Anderson

Minutes

The minutes from September 22, October 6, October 20, and October 27 were approved as distributed.

Action Items

MKTG 4175 International Marketing Strategies for the Global Perspectives Overlay
After discussion, the committee approved this submission with a vote of 9-0-0. Because this overlay will apply to our on-campus global perspectives requirement only and will not be used as an overlay requirement in the core, no additional approval from the University system is needed for this course. This course will now be forward to CAPC and University Senate as an information item.

MKTG 3180 International Marketing Environment for the Global Perspectives Overlay
During discussion, the committee noted that the outcomes for this course appeared to focus more on process and not specifically on people or cultures. The committee requested revision to note how these outcomes specifically meet the global perspectives overlay, and asked for the course to be resubmitted.

GC2Y 2000 This Island Earth as an Area B2 Section (Resubmission)
After discussion, the committee approved this section with a vote of 9-0-0. This section will now be forward to CAPC and University Senate as an information item.

GC2Y 2000 Colonialism and Post-Colonialism as an Area B2 Section
After discussion, the committee decided to ask for a resubmission of this proposal with revised outcomes. Stephanie McClure offered to serve as a point of contact between the committee and submitter to discuss concerns.

GC2Y 2000 Pan-Africanist Tradition as an Area B2 Section
The committee recommended that the submitter reduce the number of verbs in each of the outcomes and clarify the outcomes for the writing assignments to allow for easier assessment. After discussion, the committee approved this section with a vote of 9-0-0. This section will now be forward to CAPC and University Senate as an information item.

GC2Y 2000 Crossroads as an Area B2 Section
The committee voiced concerns that the proposal did not seem to apply the global perspectives outcomes to a specific topic or area of study, and that the outcomes needed to be revised for more specificity and clarification. After discussion, the committee decided to ask for a revision of this proposal. John Swinton will ask Kevin Crabb or a member of the University Assessment Team to serve as a point of contact between the committee and the submitter to discuss concerns.

Discussion Items

John Swinton discussed the committee’s recommendation for the GC2Y fourth hour with the Provost, and she endorsed that plan. We need to schedule a time to meet with the faculty who have already had a GC2Y section approved, and who may be planning to submit a GC2Y section, do discuss options for the fourth hour and how to schedule it.

We need to start a plan to assess Areas A-E of the Cube, including reviewing the information that is collected in the APRs.

Announcements

John Swinton announced that the History, Geography, and Philosophy department had decided to move forward with their GC2Y submissions, and that the previous approvals from this committee would be forwarded to CAPC, UCC, and the Provost’s Office.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, November 17, at 8:30 a.m. in Arts & Sciences 315.

Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 a.m.
