University Curriculum Committee Minutes 2011-12-02
A. Kay Anderson
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by John Swinton at 8:30 a.m., in Arts & Sciences Room 315.
Attendance
Members Present: Esther Lopez, Mary Magoulick, Cara Meade, Stephanie McClure, John Swinton, Caralyn Zender, and Kay Anderson
Discussion Items
The committee discussed setting up at least two forums for faculty in January to discuss the GC2Y course plans. John Swinton and Kay Anderson will work on identifying dates. Kay will present information on how to schedule the fourth hour. Mary Magoulick will develop a list of possible options for the fourth hour and discuss how she is approaching the fourth hour for her course. The committee will send a general invitation out to the entire campus and send specific invitations to GC2Y instructors, department chairs, and deans.
The committee considered a proposal that would allow library faculty members to provide the content for the fourth hour for the GC2Y courses. After discussion, the committee decided that the proposal was worth pursuing, but that the fourth hour provided from the library needed to be integrated with the course and course content, not simply a “using the library” course.
The committee also discussed whether core courses should be allowed to be targeted to Area F in majors, with the understanding that if the student took the course in the core, they would gain an elective in Area F. After discussion, the committee reached no consensus on this issue, and expressed the opinion that this matter might be best left to the colleges and departments.
Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 a.m.
