Action Items

MFLG (All Modern Foreign Language) 1002, 2001, and 2002 for Global Overlay
The committee discussed a proposal from Modern Foreign Language and Cultures to add each of the 1002, 2001, and 2002 courses to the global overlay. Committee members expressed concern about whether this proposal would mean that majors who required these courses to complete their degree requirements would have fewer global exposures overall, or that it would minimize global exposures in the major areas. Other discussion focused on whether or not the course should be judged entirely on their merits, regardless of how the courses might be used. The committee also discussed whether or not foreign language courses 2002 or lower fully addressed the outcomes for the global overlay, or if the primary emphasis of the course was on language instruction. Others expressed concern that adding these courses would prohibit the expansion of global courses in the major, since all Bachelor of Arts students would have more than sufficient global overlays if foreign language was used, and Bachelor of Science students would have at least one course fulfilled through this means. Discussion will continue on this topic at the next meeting.

Discussion Items

Name of the Core
The committee discussed the official name of the core curriculum. The initial committee was charged with designating an engaging name for the core curriculum, but no name came from this committee. The first year University Curriculum Committee developed and proposed the name “CUBE,” which has been used in some areas of campus. It was shared with the Senate that never went through governance. Going into our accreditation review, we need to be much more clear and deliberate in what we call the curriculum. The committee will discuss this issue more at its next meeting.

Next Meeting

The committee will meet on Wednesday, November 7, 2012, at 12 noon, in A&S 216.

Adjournment

The committee adjourned at 1:08 p.m.
